Little Rock Expands Free Fitness Programs for 600+ Senior Residents
Little Rock Parks and Recreation has expanded its no-cost exercise classes for residents 60 and older at city facilities starting this summer.
How we reported this

The Little Rock City Council approved funding last month for free senior fitness programs run through the parks department, with the first sessions set to begin July 15 at two central locations.
City leaders point to rising health costs and an aging population as reasons to prioritize these offerings now. The number of Little Rock residents over 65 grew 12 percent between 2020 and 2025, according to Pulaski County planning data, and local health officials have noted higher rates of mobility issues among that group since the pandemic.
Classes at River Market and Hillcrest sites
Sessions will run at the River Market Pavilion on East Markham Street and at Allsopp Park in the Hillcrest neighborhood. Instructors from the Little Rock Parks and Recreation Department will lead chair yoga on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and balance and strength circuits on Thursdays at 10 a.m. at both spots. Participants need only bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes.
The department reports that 180 seniors have already signed up for the first six-week block. A 2024 Centers for Disease Control report found that regular group exercise can cut fall risk by 23 percent in adults over 65, a figure cited by parks staff when they pitched the program to council members in June.
Registration and next steps
Residents can register through the parks department website or by calling the main office at 501-371-4770. Walk-ins are accepted at the first class if space remains. The program runs through August 21 with a second round planned for September at additional sites including War Memorial Park.
Anyone with questions about suitability for their health should check with their physician before attending. Details on class times and any weather-related changes appear on the city website under the senior wellness tab.
